Oxygen Market Size in Africa

The African oxygen market stood at $X in 2022, surging by 2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.9% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, oxygen production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of oxygen exported in Africa fell markedly to X cubic meters, waning by -24.8% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, oxygen exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 46%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of around X cubic meters, which amounted to 71% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Egypt (6.9%). The following exporters - Zambia (X cubic meters) and Mauritius (X cubic meters) - together made up 5.8% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+54.1%), Egypt (+27.1%) and Mauritius (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +54.1% from 2012-2022. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+10 p.p.) and Egypt (+6.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-12.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest oxygen supplier in Africa, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -2.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+56.3% per year) and Zambia (+6.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, rising by 5.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 34%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per cubic meter), while Egypt ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+18.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Oxygen Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of oxygen were imported in Africa; with a decrease of -30% on 2021 figures. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +10.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 58%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X cubic meters, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, oxygen imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 88%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mozambique (X cubic meters), followed by Botswana (X cubic meters), Namibia (X cubic meters), Swaziland (X cubic meters), Kenya (X cubic meters) and Morocco (X cubic meters) represented the main importers of oxygen, together achieving 58% of total imports. The following importers - Libya (X cubic meters), Mauritius (X cubic meters), Togo (X cubic meters), Madagascar (X cubic meters), Ghana (X cubic meters), Niger (X cubic meters) and South Africa (X cubic meters) - together made up 22% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +269.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Namibia ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 28% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Botswana, Mauritius, Kenya, Swaziland, Ghana, Madagascar, Libya, Niger, South Africa and Togo, which together accounted for a further 29%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +127.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, shrinking by -8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per cubic meter), while Togo ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
