The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 27%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, packaging materials exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 46% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together committing a 44% share of total exports. The following exporters - Morocco (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +29.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest packaging materials supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +26.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Packaging materials imports expanded markedly to X tons in 2022, rising by 7.9% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, packaging materials imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.5% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2022, Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of packaging materials in Africa, mixing up 60% of total import. Kenya (X tons) held a 5.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (5.2%). Tunisia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +12.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 49% share of total imports. South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Sudan, Tanzania and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +14.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
