In 2021, the African lock and key market decreased by -6.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, shipments abroad of padlocks, locks and keys of base metal was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lock and key exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +28.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 51%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together making up a 38% share of total exports. Rwanda (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of padlocks, locks and keys of base metal. At the same time, Rwanda (+161.1%) and Morocco (+24.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +161.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-4.1%) and Egypt (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco and Rwanda increased by +18 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest lock and key supplier in Africa, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, lock and key exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+25.2% per year) and Tunisia (-2.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, imports of padlocks, locks and keys of base metal in Africa stood at X tons, growing by 9.6% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 16%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, lock and key imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Djibouti (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
