The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-aqueous paint and varnish exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together generating 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons) and Uganda (X tons), together constituting a 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ghana (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +44.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest non-aqueous paint and varnish supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt totaled +1.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-2.9% per year) and Morocco (+5.2% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, non-aqueous paint and varnish export price increased by +71.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-aqueous paint and varnish imports reduced to $X in 2022.
