The third position in this ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Nigeria amounted to +4.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Ghana (+3.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.4% per year).

In 2022, overseas shipments of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing increased by 45% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates sowing structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 59% of total exports in 2022. Kenya (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together took near 26% share of total exports. Rwanda (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+137.7%), Rwanda (+36.1%), Kenya (+13.5%) and Tanzania (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +137.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-6.1%) and Egypt (-20.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+19 p.p.), Kenya (+7.9 p.p.), Tanzania (+6.9 p.p.), Rwanda (+4.4 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-32.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest seed, fruit and spore used for sowing supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 5.7% share.
In South Africa, exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+11.6% per year) and Zimbabwe (+2.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -19.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 89% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+30.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
Imports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing reduced notably to X tons in 2022, waning by -15.7% on the previous year. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 20%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Egypt dominates sowing structure, recording X tons, which was near 90% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - South Africa (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - each recorded a 4% share of total imports.
Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+20.6%) and South Africa (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.6% from 2012-2022. Egypt (+4.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing in Africa, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 6.6% share of total imports.
In Egypt, imports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing contracted by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-2.2% per year) and Zimbabwe (+21.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
