Papaya Market Size in Africa

The African papaya market reached $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 4.4%. After five years of growth, shipments abroad of papayas decreased by -17.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, papaya exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 95% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the major exporter of papayas in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 47% of total exports in 2022. Mozambique (X tons) held a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (13%) and Angola (8.4%). Morocco (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +198.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest papaya supplier in Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana totaled +21.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+169.6% per year) and Angola (+56.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in purchases abroad of papayas, which increased by 34% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 233% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, papaya imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 105%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the major importer of papayas, committing 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), committing a 35% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +137.0%).
