Paper Knife Market Size in Africa

The African paper knife market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Paper Knife Production in Africa

In value terms, paper knife production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +64.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 85% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of paper knives increased by 19% to X units in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 48%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper knife exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. Rwanda (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+181.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +181.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Rwanda increased by +1.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest paper knife supplier in Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 0.3% share of total exports.

In South Africa, paper knife exports declined by an average annual rate of -3.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda stood at less than $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.4%).

In 2022, the amount of paper knives imported in Africa reduced to X units, almost unchanged from 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper knife imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +10.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units), Algeria (X units), Ghana (X units), Kenya (X units), Tanzania (X units), Morocco (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Libya (X units), Senegal (X units), Cameroon (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Angola (X units) represented the major importer of paper knives in Africa, constituting 73% of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Morocco ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 38% of total imports. Kenya, Ghana, Libya, Tunisia, Senegal, Tanzania, Cameroon, Angola, Cote d'Ivoire and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Among the main importing countries, Cameroon, with a CAGR of +13.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 2.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper knife import price decreased by -3.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Ethiopia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
