The total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +69.0% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 17%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of paper trays, dishes, plates and cups increased by 38% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 41%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. Madagascar (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.8% share, followed by Egypt (4.7%). Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper dishes and cups exports from South Africa stood at +8.1%. At the same time, Madagascar (+93.2%) and Algeria (+33.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +93.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-17.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+28 p.p.), Madagascar (+6.7 p.p.) and Algeria (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -29.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest paper dishes and cups supplier in Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 6.7% share.

In South Africa, paper dishes and cups exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-3.3% per year) and Madagascar (+75.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+16.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

For the fourth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of paper trays, dishes, plates and cups, which increased by 19% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +120.3% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +77.2% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the largest importers of paper trays, dishes, plates and cups, together creating 66% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Seychelles (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paper trays, dishes, plates and cups imports, with a CAGR of +69.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+59.0%), Burkina Faso (+39.8%), Seychelles (+33.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+23.5%), Tanzania (+21.8%), Ghana (+21.5%), Morocco (+12.6%), Tunisia (+8.9%) and Mauritius (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Libya (-5.0%) and Algeria (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+26 p.p.), Botswana (+9.6 p.p.), Morocco (+6.3 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+3.4 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.1 p.p.), Seychelles (+2.4 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Algeria (-5.1 p.p.), Libya (-14.6 p.p.) and South Africa (-16.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Libya ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 34% of total imports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +52.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 4.8% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
