The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Drawing Chalk Production in Africa
In value terms, drawing chalk production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
Drawing chalk exports soared to X units in 2021, rising by 26% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 30%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, drawing chalk exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the key exporter of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks, achieving 49% of total exports. Tunisia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 25% share, followed by Rwanda (17%). Kenya (X units) and Uganda (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to drawing chalk exports from South Africa stood at -6.6%. At the same time, Rwanda (+55.4%) and Uganda (+43.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +55.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-2.0%) and Kenya (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Rwanda (+17 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.1 p.p.) and Uganda (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-17.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Kenya ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 90% share of total exports. Uganda and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 2.7%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Uganda, with a CAGR of +42.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
After three years of decline, purchases abroad of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks increased by 81% to X units in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Ghana (X units), Togo (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), South Africa (X units), Cameroon (X units), Guinea (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Kenya (X units), Benin (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Madagascar (X units) and Mali (X units) represented roughly 76% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +40.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Togo ($X) and Cameroon ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 29% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco, Guinea, Ghana, Benin, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Mali and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +44.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -13.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 70% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
