Peanut Butter Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African peanut butter market decreased by -4.3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -4.6% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, peanut butter production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 20%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of peanut butter and prepared or preserved groundnuts decreased by -33.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, peanut butter exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), constituting a 9.5% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Benin (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+26.8%), Kenya (+23.9%) and Benin (+20.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +26.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+15 p.p.), Kenya (+3.7 p.p.), Benin (+1.8 p.p.) and Niger (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tanzania (-19.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest peanut butter supplier in Africa, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 6% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 3.2% share.

In South Africa, peanut butter exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Benin (+53.4% per year) and Kenya (+16.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+27.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of peanut butter and prepared or preserved groundnuts decreased by -3.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, peanut butter imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kenya (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 50% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Libya (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 23% share of total imports. Madagascar (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Somalia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +49.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kenya ($X), South Africa ($X) and Botswana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 53% of total imports. Namibia, Libya, Mauritius, Swaziland, Morocco, Madagascar, Lesotho, Nigeria, Somalia and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +41.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 12%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
