The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, pears and quinces imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +91.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 39%. Libya (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (6.1%) and Nigeria (4.7%). The following importers - Cabo Verde (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 8.8% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pears and quinces imports into Morocco stood at +19.6%. At the same time, Nigeria (+26.6%), Botswana (+22.9%), Senegal (+15.5%) and Cabo Verde (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012-2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Libya (-1.1%) and Angola (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+36 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.9 p.p.), Senegal (+3.4 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius, Angola and Libya saw its share reduced by -2%, -5.1% and -16.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pears and quinces in Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Libya ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 7.4% share.
In Morocco, pears and quinces imports increased at an average annual rate of +23.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Libya (+0.6% per year) and Senegal (+17.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 16%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
