In 2021, the African dry peas market decreased by -4.1% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The third position in this ranking was taken by Madagascar (X tons), with a 3.6% share.

In Ethiopia, dry peas production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-12.0% per year) and Madagascar (-0.1% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of peas (dry) in Africa totaled X tons per ha, with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of peas (dry) were harvested in Africa; remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 2.4% against the previous year. In 2021, shipments abroad of peas (dry) increased by 68% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry peas exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tanzania (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) represented the largest exporters of peas (dry) in Africa, together comprising 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), South Sudan (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons), together making up a 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Malawi (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) - each reached an 8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Kenya (with a CAGR of +62.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kenya ($X), Tanzania ($X) and South Sudan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 68% of total exports.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +60.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 28%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Sudan (+16.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, dry peas imports in Africa fell to X tons, with a decrease of -10.6% on 2020. In general, imports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, dry peas imports shrank to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +77.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of dry peas imports in 2021 were Ethiopia (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons), together accounting for 51% of total import. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a 4.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (4.7%). Malawi (X tons), South Sudan (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Malawi (with a CAGR of +82.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest dry peas importing markets in Africa were Ethiopia ($X), Kenya ($X) and Djibouti ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon, South Sudan, South Africa, Togo and Senegal, which together accounted for a further 40%.

Malawi, with a CAGR of +65.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
