Green Peas Market Size in Africa

The African green peas market expanded rapidly to $X in 2022, picking up by 5.7% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, green peas production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 50%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together accounting for 72% of total production. Kenya, Tunisia and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +4.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average green peas yield reduced slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the green peas yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of peas (green) production in Africa expanded slightly to X ha, picking up by 2.3% against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 9.3%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to green peas production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

Green peas exports declined markedly to X tons in 2022, falling by -19.6% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 49%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green peas exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -31.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 56%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kenya represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 54% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Zimbabwe (7.4%), Tanzania (7.4%) and Botswana (5.9%). Morocco (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to green peas exports from Kenya stood at +3.1%. At the same time, Botswana (+89.3%), Tanzania (+21.0%) and Morocco (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +89.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-6.1%), Egypt (-12.0%) and Malawi (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kenya (+23 p.p.), Tanzania (+6.6 p.p.), Botswana (+5.9 p.p.) and Morocco (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Zimbabwe, Malawi and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3.5%, -4.9% and -25.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the largest green peas supplier in Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 3.6% share.

In Kenya, green peas exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-0.1% per year) and Zimbabwe (-14.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -10.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+13.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of peas (green) increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green peas imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Ethiopia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the major importers of peas (green) in 2022, amounting to near 32% and 25% of total imports, respectively. South Africa (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together took near 18% share of total imports. Uganda (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Libya (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +84.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green peas importing markets in Africa were Ethiopia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Uganda ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports. Mozambique, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Libya and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +76.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -24.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
