The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 26%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of pedestrian-controlled tractors, when their volume decreased by -5.5% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 95%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, pedestrian-controlled tractor exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 245% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the largest exporter of pedestrian-controlled tractors, committing 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cameroon (X units), committing a 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Congo (X units), Niger (X units), Malawi (X units), Botswana (X units) and Uganda (X units) - together made up 10% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pedestrian-controlled tractor exports from South Africa stood at +7.8%. At the same time, Cameroon (+60.0%), Congo (+39.2%), Botswana (+23.4%), Uganda (+21.2%) and Niger (+17.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +60.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malawi (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cameroon (+14 p.p.) and Congo (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malawi (-3.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-8.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest pedestrian-controlled tractor supplier in Africa, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cameroon ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 1.5% share.

In South Africa, pedestrian-controlled tractor exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cameroon (+43.1% per year) and Botswana (+32.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, declining by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 77%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+28.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

Pedestrian-controlled tractor imports skyrocketed to X units in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, imports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, pedestrian-controlled tractor imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 58%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), Madagascar (X units), Sudan (X units) and Togo (X units) represented the major importers of pedestrian-controlled tractors, together creating 54% of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X units), Ghana (X units), Benin (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Egypt (X units), Angola (X units), South Africa (X units) and Senegal (X units) - together made up 25% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +48.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pedestrian-controlled tractor importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Madagascar ($X), with a combined 37% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Angola, Egypt, Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Ghana, Benin, Senegal and Togo, which together accounted for a further 37%.

Among the main importing countries, Benin, with a CAGR of +45.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -8.1% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
