The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, citrus fruit or melons peel exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 60%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 44% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Morocco (16%), Nigeria (7.8%) and Tunisia (6.8%). Egypt (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peel of citrus fruit or melons exports, with a CAGR of +26.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+17.3%), Senegal (+9.9%), Tunisia (+3.9%) and Morocco (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+33 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.8 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3.6%, -9.1% and -15.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest citrus fruit or melons peel supplier in Africa, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana amounted to +22.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+11.1% per year) and Morocco (+7.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of peel of citrus fruit or melons was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, citrus fruit or melons peel imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong increase. While the share of Nigeria (+46 p.p.), Morocco (+17 p.p.), South Africa (+14 p.p.), Gambia (+5.6 p.p.) and Liberia (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 87% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, South Africa, with a CAGR of +89.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7% against the previous year. Import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
