Perfume Market Size in Africa

The African perfume market reduced to $X in 2022, falling by -7.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Perfume Production in Africa

In value terms, perfume production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of perfumes and toilet waters increased by 3.7% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 39%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, perfume exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +62.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the major exporter of perfumes and toilet waters, creating 39% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons), together generating a 53% share of total exports. The following exporters - Nigeria (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each recorded a 4.2% share of total exports.

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire decreased at an average annual rate of -2.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+19.1%), South Africa (+6.7%), Nigeria (+2.8%) and Tunisia (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012-2022. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Morocco (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+9.8 p.p.), Senegal (+1.6 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Morocco and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -2.6% and -8.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest perfume supplying countries in Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 70% of total exports. South Africa, Mauritius, Senegal and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Mauritius, with a CAGR of +37.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, perfume export price increased by +31.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+15.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of perfumes and toilet waters, when their volume decreased by -11.2% to X tons. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 24%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, perfume imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of perfume imports in 2022 were Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Libya (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Mali (X tons), Somalia (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together recording 73% of total import. Kenya (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +42.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Libya ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 38% share of total imports. Ghana, Algeria, Senegal, Sudan, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Somalia, Mali, Nigeria and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +34.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
