The African persimmon market rose modestly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a strong expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Persimmon Production in Africa
In value terms, persimmon production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of persimmon production was South Africa (X tons), comprising approx. 69% of total volume. Moreover, persimmon production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), eightfold. Central African Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.6% share.
In South Africa, persimmon production increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tanzania (+2.0% per year) and Central African Republic (+0.7% per year).

Exports in Africa
In 2021, overseas shipments of persimmons increased by 2.1% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, persimmon exports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), committing a 7% share of total exports. Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+20.6%) and Cameroon (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.6% from 2012-2021. Morocco (+6.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -8.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest persimmon supplier in Africa, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -11.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+16.6% per year) and Cameroon (+5.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -14.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (-2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Persimmon Imports
Imports in Africa
For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in purchases abroad of persimmons, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 139%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, persimmon imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 124%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Morocco dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 83% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritania (X tons), constituting a 6.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Cabo Verde (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to persimmon imports into Morocco stood at +30.3%. At the same time, Mauritania (+57.5%), Mali (+57.1%), Senegal (+43.2%) and Cabo Verde (+33.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +57.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Morocco (+27 p.p.), Mauritania (+5.8 p.p.) and Mali (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported persimmons in Africa, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritania ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco totaled +30.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritania (+43.3% per year) and Cabo Verde (+31.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
