Sodium Phosphates Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African sodium phosphates market decreased by -3.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, sodium phosphates production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of phosphates of mono- or di-sodium were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sodium phosphates exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a measured increase. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sodium phosphates exports from South Africa stood at +8.4%. At the same time, Morocco (+43.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +43.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-23.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Morocco increased by +57 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sodium phosphates supplier in Africa, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 2.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +13.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+24.1% per year) and Tunisia (-25.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -33.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 48%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of phosphates of mono- or di-sodium, when their volume decreased by -7.3% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, sodium phosphates imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Kenya was the key importer of phosphates of mono- or di-sodium in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 50% of total imports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Nigeria (12%), Egypt (8.7%) and Tunisia (5.7%). The following importers - Ghana (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total imports.

Imports into Kenya increased at an average annual rate of +17.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+54.1%), Ghana (+20.2%), Egypt (+14.7%), Tunisia (+10.3%) and Nigeria (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +54.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kenya, Egypt, Tunisia, Ghana and Mozambique increased by +34, +5.2, +2.4, +2.4 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported phosphates of mono- or di-sodium in Africa, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kenya stood at +24.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+17.0% per year) and Nigeria (-0.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
