Market Size for Phosphorus, Arsenic And Selenium in Africa

The African phosphorus, arsenic and selenium market dropped modestly to $X in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed significant growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production of Phosphorus, Arsenic And Selenium in Africa

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium production shrank modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -11.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium increased by 3.9% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a precipitous contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 163% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 518% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports, with a CAGR of +31.6% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-21.9%) and Namibia (-50.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+93 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Namibia saw its share reduced by -89.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Namibia ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 100% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +26.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -16.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price faced a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 149% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium were imported in Africa; with a decrease of -3.5% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 45%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 84% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Egypt (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports into South Africa stood at -4.6%. At the same time, Nigeria (+19.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -5.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported phosphorus, arsenic and selenium in Africa, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -2.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-8.8% per year) and Nigeria (+31.4% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
