South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X square meters, which was approx. 71% of total exports in 2021. Mali (X square meters) took a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (9.4%).

Mali (+9.4 p.p.) and Kenya (+7.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -15.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest photographic film supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -10.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+7.9% per year) and Mali (+23.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per square meter, picking up by 9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a resilient increase. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic film imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest levels of photographic film imports in 2021 were South Africa (X square meters), Nigeria (X square meters), Algeria (X square meters) and Egypt (X square meters), together amounting to 49% of total import. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X square meters), making up a 6.1% share of total imports. Tanzania (X square meters), Ghana (X square meters), Tunisia (X square meters), Ethiopia (X square meters), Cote d'Ivoire (X square meters), Kenya (X square meters), Senegal (X square meters) and Cameroon (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of -0.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest photographic film importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 47% share of total imports. Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Ethiopia and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +6.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per square meter, surging by 21% against the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, photographic film import price increased by +92.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per square meter), while Nigeria ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
