Piano Market Size in Africa

The African piano market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, surging by 8.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, piano production expanded significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 21%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of pianos and other keyboard stringed musical instruments increased by 6.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 7,316% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, piano exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 690%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest exporter of pianos and other keyboard stringed musical instruments, creating 28% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together held near 41% share of total exports. Namibia (X kg), Malawi (X kg), Angola (X kg), Zimbabwe (X kg), Togo (X kg), Rwanda (X kg) and Ghana (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -17.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+33.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+32.0%), Rwanda (+31.6%), Nigeria (+29.6%), Angola (+20.0%), Togo (+15.8%), Tanzania (+4.4%), Ghana (+4.0%) and Ethiopia (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +33.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malawi (-6.0%), Zimbabwe (-6.5%) and Namibia (-18.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Zambia, Ethiopia, Angola, Togo and Rwanda increased by +8.6, +7.8, +7.6, +5.1, +5, +3.3, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest piano supplier in Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 2.5% share.

In South Africa, piano exports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+32.3% per year) and Ethiopia (-4.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 50% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 747%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+19.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After three years of decline, purchases abroad of pianos and other keyboard stringed musical instruments increased by 18% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, piano imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total imports in 2021. Nigeria (X tons) took a 7.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (6.6%), Tunisia (5.7%) and Mauritius (5.3%). The following importers - Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritius (with a CAGR of +20.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest piano importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports. Egypt, Tunisia, Angola, Algeria, Mauritius, Kenya, Namibia and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +12.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
