In 2021, the average yield of pigeon peas in Africa expanded rapidly to X tons per ha, growing by 7.2% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of pigeon peas production in Africa shrank modestly to X ha, remaining constant against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 7.1%. In 2021, overseas shipments of pigeon peas increased by 45% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, pigeon peas exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tanzania (X tons) was the major exporter of pigeon peas, making up 63% of total exports. Sudan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Mozambique (10%). The following exporters - Kenya (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.7% share of total exports.

Exports from Tanzania increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+224.4%), Uganda (+25.0%) and Sudan (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +224.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mozambique, Sudan and Tanzania increased by +10, +5 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest pigeon peas supplier in Africa, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sudan ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Tanzania totaled +7.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sudan (+15.4% per year) and Mozambique (+389.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Sudan ($X per ton) and Uganda ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) and Mozambique ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+51.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of pigeon peas, when their volume decreased by -34.3% to X tons. In general, imports saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pigeon peas imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 64% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (8.3%) and Lesotho (6%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Zimbabwe increased at an average annual rate of +12.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+121.8%), Lesotho (+54.5%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+38.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +121.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-23.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zimbabwe (+47 p.p.), South Africa (+14 p.p.), Lesotho (+5.9 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kenya (-66.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pigeon peas in Africa, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Zimbabwe amounted to +15.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+116.6% per year) and Lesotho (+41.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 37%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
