Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +495.1% from 2012-2021. Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-24.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Benin (+42 p.p.), Togo (+21 p.p.), Senegal (+8.5 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+3.5 p.p.), Madagascar (+3.4 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-64.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Togo ($X), Benin ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 75% share of total exports.

Togo, with a CAGR of +510.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 18%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 4.1%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
