Nigeria (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pineapple production, accounting for 29% of total volume. Moreover, pineapple production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ghana (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Angola (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Nigeria was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+1.1% per year) and Angola (+8.8% per year).

In 2022, the average pineapple yield in Africa shrank slightly to X tons per ha, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 6%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the pineapple harvested area in Africa shrank modestly to X ha, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 3.2%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of pineapples exported in Africa fell to X tons, waning by -6.9% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 78% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the key exporter of pineapples in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 44% of total exports in 2022. Kenya (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Ghana (20%) and Uganda (5.3%). South Africa (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pineapples. At the same time, Kenya (+57.7%) and Uganda (+29.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +57.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-1.0%), Ghana (-7.6%) and Cameroon (-17.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kenya (+21 p.p.), Uganda (+4.9 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cameroon (-9.9 p.p.) and Ghana (-18.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest pineapple supplying countries in Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Kenya ($X), together comprising 87% of total exports.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +48.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pineapple Imports

Imports in Africa

Pineapple imports rose notably to X tons in 2022, increasing by 14% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 2,730%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pineapple imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Morocco was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and Togo (X tons), together comprising a 38% share of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +173.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total imports. Botswana, Libya, Algeria, Togo and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +49.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -13.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 2,014% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
