Pistachio Market Size in Africa

The African pistachio market expanded sharply to $X in 2022, surging by 6.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +58.1% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Pistachio Production in Africa

In value terms, pistachio production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 140%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Madagascar (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Madagascar (with a CAGR of +10.8%).

In 2022, the average pistachio yield in Africa shrank modestly to X kg per ha, approximately equating 2021 figures. The yield indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio yield increased by +4.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of pistachios production in Africa contracted to X ha, declining by -2.9% compared with 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 8.9%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of pistachios exported in Africa plummeted to X tons, waning by -41.7% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 649% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 346% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 56% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons), together making up a 33% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pistachio exports from South Africa stood at +29.2%. At the same time, Benin (+39.1%), Egypt (+37.5%), Cameroon (+23.8%), Kenya (+8.0%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +39.1% from 2012-2022. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Madagascar (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Benin, Cameroon and Egypt increased by +42, +8, +4.1 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest pistachio supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, pistachio exports increased at an average annual rate of +34.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-2.2% per year) and Kenya (+7.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+9.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

For the seventh year in a row, Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of pistachios, which increased by 10% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pistachio imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of pistachios, namely Egypt, Morocco, Libya and Algeria, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - South Africa (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - each finished at a 7.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Libya (with a CAGR of +22.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Libya ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 81% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Libya, with a CAGR of +25.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 26%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
