At the same time, Somalia (+43.0%), Cameroon (+29.8%), Senegal (+19.4%), Botswana (+16.1%), Morocco (+9.7%), Tunisia (+6.3%), Ghana (+5.5%), Kenya (+4.7%) and South Africa (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Somalia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +43.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Libya (-4.0%), Sudan (-4.3%) and Algeria (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Somalia (+4.4 p.p.), Senegal (+3.1 p.p.), Tunisia (+2.9 p.p.), Cameroon (+2.3 p.p.), Morocco (+2.2 p.p.), Ghana (+1.9 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Libya, Algeria and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -2.8%, -5.1% and -9.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Libya ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 30% share of total imports. Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Somalia, Senegal, Cameroon, Sudan, Botswana and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

Somalia, with a CAGR of +42.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -14.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
