Mauritius dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), achieving an 8.9% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 106% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mauritius amounted to $X per unit.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the major importer of plastic frames and mountings for spectacles and goggles in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was near 61% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Algeria (5.7%) and Egypt (4.6%). Tunisia (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Kenya (X units) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to spectacle plastic frame imports into South Africa stood at +6.7%. At the same time, Kenya (+32.9%), Algeria (+29.3%), Morocco (+16.9%), Mauritius (+16.8%) and Tunisia (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +32.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco, Algeria and Mauritius increased by +7.9, +4.6 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 77% of total imports. Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritius and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
Kenya, with a CAGR of +30.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
