As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of plastic frames and mountings for spectacles and goggles in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was near 61% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Algeria (5.7%) and Egypt (4.6%). Tunisia (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Kenya (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 77% of total imports. Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritius and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +30.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
