Exports in Africa
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of plastic parts for lamps and lighting fittings decreased by -20.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 132% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.
In value terms, lamp plastic parts exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporter of plastic parts for lamps and lighting fittings in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (12%).
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+51.1%) and Morocco (+17.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +51.1% from 2012-2021. Egypt (+18 p.p.) and Morocco (+4.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -14.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) emerged as the largest lamp plastic parts supplier in Africa, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+48.7% per year) and Morocco (+12.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of plastic parts for lamps and lighting fittings imported in Africa soared to X tons, rising by 21% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lamp plastic parts imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +129.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Algeria (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Togo (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) represented roughly 80% of total imports in 2021.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Libya (with a CAGR of +27.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lamp plastic parts importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 42% of total imports. South Africa, Kenya, Cameroon, Morocco, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Libya, Togo and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
Libya, with a CAGR of +38.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 39% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, lamp plastic parts import price increased by +41.1% against 2015 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
