The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) represented the major exporter of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip, constituting 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together mixing up a 39% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+69.6%), Kenya (+5.4%), Tunisia (+3.3%) and South Africa (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +69.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Nigeria (+13 p.p.) and Egypt (+7.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-6.7 p.p.) and Tunisia (-7.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip supplier in Africa, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 10% share.

In Egypt, exports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip expanded at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+4.0% per year) and South Africa (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip in Africa amounted to X tons, increasing by 5.6% against 2020. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The countries with the highest levels of imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip in 2021 were South Africa (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Libya (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons), together finishing at 76% of total import. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

These countries were followed by Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Ghana, Kenya, Sudan, Libya, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ethiopia, which together accounted for a further 41%.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +17.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
