In 2022, plastic reservoir exports in Africa dropped to X tons, shrinking by -15% against 2021 figures. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -31.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic reservoir exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the major exporters of plastic reservoirs, tanks and vats, together making up 84% of total exports. The following exporters - Uganda (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - each finished at a 6.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +142.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Botswana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 70% of total exports. Ghana, Uganda, Togo and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +93.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -21.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of plastic reservoirs, tanks and vats increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 15%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, plastic reservoir imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +85.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Morocco was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 24% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), constituting a 7.6% share of total imports. Nigeria (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Togo (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic reservoir imports into Morocco stood at +26.2%. At the same time, Togo (+39.3%), Mali (+28.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+19.5%), Senegal (+13.7%), Lesotho (+12.2%), South Africa (+8.0%), Nigeria (+7.4%), Tunisia (+5.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.2%), Swaziland (+4.2%) and Algeria (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012-2022. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Morocco (+21 p.p.), Togo (+3.5 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.4 p.p.), Mali (+2 p.p.), Lesotho (+2 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic reservoirs, tanks and vats in Africa, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 4.8% share.

In Morocco, plastic reservoir imports expanded at an average annual rate of +26.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+18.1% per year) and Algeria (+2.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
