In 2022, overseas shipments of plastic sacks and bags increased by 19% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic bag exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Togo represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together creating a 34% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plastic sacks and bags exports, with a CAGR of +7.1% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa, Egypt and Swaziland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Cote d'Ivoire (-15.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo and South Africa increased by +27 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Togo ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 81% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +6.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of plastic sacks and bags decreased by -1.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
In value terms, plastic bag imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of plastic bag imports in 2022 were Angola (X tons), Mali (X tons), Ghana (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together amounting to 63% of total import. Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Somalia (with a CAGR of +23.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Senegal ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 25% share of total imports. Mali, Morocco, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Algeria, Somalia, Nigeria, Sudan, Mozambique and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
Somalia, with a CAGR of +28.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
