Plastic Closure Market Size in Africa

The African plastic closure market totaled $X in 2022, increasing by 4.5% against the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 31%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic closure exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 30%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 41% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Kenya (11%) and Tunisia (6%). Botswana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of +84.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 80% share of total exports. Tunisia, Mauritius, Cote d'Ivoire, Botswana, Morocco, Tanzania and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +71.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -7.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

Plastic closure imports amounted to X tons in 2022, approximately equating the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic closure imports expanded to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of plastic stoppers, caps and closures, namely Algeria, South Africa and Morocco, represented more than third of total import. Tunisia (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Libya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 7%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
