The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -7.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The purchases of the three major importers of plastic stoppers, caps and closures, namely Algeria, South Africa and Morocco, represented more than third of total import. In value terms, Algeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 41% share of total imports. Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Ghana, Senegal and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +11.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 7%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
