In 2021, the African plastic household ware market increased by 4.1% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of plastics household articles and toilet articles, when their volume increased by 21% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 75%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic household ware exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) represented the main exporters of plastics household articles and toilet articles in Africa, together finishing at approx. 58% of total exports. Kenya (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X tons) and Morocco (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 25% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) and Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +138.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest plastic household ware supplier in Africa, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +4.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+102.8% per year) and Egypt (+5.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of plastics household articles and toilet articles in Africa expanded markedly to X tons, picking up by 11% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, plastic household ware imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +35.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 31%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2021, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Libya (X tons), Senegal (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) were the major importers of plastics household articles and toilet articles, together making up 37% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic household ware imports into Ghana stood at +16.8%. At the same time, Liberia (+23.3%), Gambia (+22.4%), Nigeria (+22.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+17.3%), Cameroon (+16.5%), Senegal (+13.8%), Burkina Faso (+10.8%), Morocco (+2.9%), Libya (+2.7%) and Tanzania (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.3% from 2012-2021. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Gambia, Liberia, Cameroon and Burkina Faso increased by +9.6, +2.7, +2.6, +2, +1.9, +1.8 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastics household articles and toilet articles in Africa, comprising 17% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Libya, with a 7.1% share.

In Ghana, plastic household ware imports expanded at an average annual rate of +18.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+0.2% per year) and Libya (+6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
