The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Tunisia was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 54% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Kenya (X tons). All these countries together took near 41% share of total exports.

Exports from Tunisia increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+41.6%), Kenya (+17.0%) and South Africa (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +41.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt and Kenya increased by +22 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 89% of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +41.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, imports of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in Africa rose rapidly to X tons, increasing by 12% on 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +52.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +27.4% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, namely Morocco, Algeria and South Africa, represented more than third of total import. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together comprising a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Tunisia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Libya (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up 23% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +32.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-cellular polyethylene film importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Algeria ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 41% of total imports. Tunisia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Sudan, Angola, Libya, Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +30.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
