Platinum Catalysts Market Size in Africa

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the African platinum catalysts market, when its value increased by 14% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, platinum catalysts imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. Egypt dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 88% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X kg), Nigeria (X kg), Algeria (X kg) and Ghana (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +31.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+66.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +66.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Algeria (-7.2%), Nigeria (-10.6%) and South Africa (-39.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+87 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-90.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported platinum catalysts in Africa, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 0.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +49.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-20.5% per year) and Algeria (-0.9% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per kg in 2022, shrinking by -30.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 167%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per kg, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per kg), while Ghana ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+31.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
