In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the African platinum catalysts market, when its value increased by 14% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. In 2022, overseas shipments of platinum catalysts decreased by -40.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 3,358%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, platinum catalysts exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 1,502% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) was the largest exporter of platinum catalysts in Africa, comprising 98% of total export.
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the platinum catalysts exports, with a CAGR of +95.9% from 2012 to 2022. Egypt (+97 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) also remains the largest platinum catalysts supplier in Africa.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt stood at +114.9%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per kg in 2022, growing by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 494% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per kg. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Egypt.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Egypt amounted to +9.7% per year.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of platinum catalysts were imported in Africa; surging by 14% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 193%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, platinum catalysts imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 57%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Egypt dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 88% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X kg), Nigeria (X kg), Algeria (X kg) and Ghana (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +31.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+66.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +66.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Algeria (-7.2%), Nigeria (-10.6%) and South Africa (-39.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+87 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-90.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported platinum catalysts in Africa, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 0.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +49.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-20.5% per year) and Algeria (-0.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per kg in 2022, shrinking by -30.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 167%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per kg, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per kg), while Ghana ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+31.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
