In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in the African pliers and pincers market, when its value decreased by -2.5% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pliers and pincers exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa was the key exporter of pliers, pincers and tweezers for nonmedical use in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 68% of total exports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Rwanda (5.6%). Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Rwanda (+182.7%), Mauritius (+81.1%) and Tunisia (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +182.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mauritius (+14 p.p.), Rwanda (+5.6 p.p.) and Tunisia (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-21.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest pliers and pincers supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 94% share of total exports. Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 0.4%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +200.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 36% against the previous year. Export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pliers and pincers export price increased by +94.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 43%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of pliers, pincers and tweezers for nonmedical use decreased by -8.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 81%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pliers and pincers imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 42%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) represented the largest importers of pliers, pincers and tweezers for nonmedical use in 2021, amounting to approx. 13% and 11% of total imports, respectively. Nigeria (X tons) held a 7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (6.8%), Morocco (6.5%), Ghana (6.1%) and Kenya (4.8%). Libya (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +33.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pliers and pincers importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 36% of total imports. Morocco, Ghana, Libya, Tanzania, Kenya, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Egypt and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +23.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
