Plough Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African plough market decreased by -56% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed strong growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.

Plough Production in Africa

In value terms, plough production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of ploughs for agricultural purposes exported in Africa expanded remarkably to X units, increasing by 8.6% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 154%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plough exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Zimbabwe (X units) and South Africa (X units) dominates exports structure, together making up 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X units), constituting a 6.4% share of total exports. Mozambique (X units), Morocco (X units), Kenya (X units) and Malawi (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +35.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest plough supplier in Africa, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with an 8% share.

In South Africa, plough exports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (-12.2% per year) and Botswana (+39.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, plough export price increased by +67.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of ploughs for agricultural purposes decreased by -63.9% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 169%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, plough imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 83%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the major importing country with an import of around X units, which recorded 46% of total imports. Sudan (X units) took a 9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (5.1%) and Zambia (5.1%). Algeria (X units), Kenya (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Mozambique (X units), Botswana (X units), Ghana (X units), South Africa (X units) and Angola (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ploughs for agricultural purposes imports, with a CAGR of +28.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+22.6%), Kenya (+12.6%), Tanzania (+10.8%), Ghana (+4.9%), Sudan (+4.7%) and Ethiopia (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-1.7%), South Africa (-9.9%), Algeria (-10.0%) and Angola (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+40 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.2 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.1 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana, Zambia, South Africa, Angola and Algeria saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -4.5%, -6.7%, -13.6% and -13.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ploughs for agricultural purposes in Africa, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +14.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+15.4% per year) and Kenya (+13.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
