In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols, when their volume decreased by -54.5% to X tons. In general, exports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 397% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 189% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 56% of total exports. Kenya (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Togo (X tons). All these countries together took near 42% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kenya (+68.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +68.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-3.9%) and Togo (-22.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kenya (+18 p.p.), South Africa (+12 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+6.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Togo (-35.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) emerged as the largest polyphenols and phenol-alcohols supplier in Africa, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 13% share.

In South Africa, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+69.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-8.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 29%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols were imported in Africa; picking up by 36% on the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw resilient growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Togo (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the major importers of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols, together mixing up 85% of total imports. The following importers - Cameroon (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - together made up 6.9% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +21.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Togo ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 71% of total imports. South Africa, Senegal, Cameroon and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +39.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 30% against the previous year. Import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols import price increased by +63.8% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
