In 2022, overseas purchases of polypropylene in primary forms were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. In 2022, Egypt (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main importers of polypropylene in primary forms, together comprising 62% of total imports. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sudan (+15.3%), Djibouti (+11.7%), Ghana (+10.7%), Algeria (+10.7%), South Africa (+8.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+8.4%), Ethiopia (+7.5%), Tanzania (+5.8%), Morocco (+5.7%), Kenya (+5.1%) and Tunisia (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sudan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +15.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Algeria (+3.7 p.p.) and Sudan (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -9.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest polypropylene in primary forms importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. Algeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, South Africa, Ghana, Tunisia, Sudan, Djibouti and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Among the main importing countries, Sudan, with a CAGR of +14.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
