The African polyurethanes market totaled $X in 2021, with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. In value terms, polyurethanes exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Morocco (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) dominates exports structure, together comprising 94% of total exports. Sudan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sudan (with a CAGR of +251.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest polyurethanes supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Sudan ($X), together accounting for 95% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Sudan, with a CAGR of +207.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 21% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, polyurethanes export price decreased by -10.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Polyurethanes imports rose remarkably to X tons in 2021, picking up by 12% compared with 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 18%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 57% of total imports. Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Among the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +41.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
