In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the African porous-tipped pen market, when its value decreased by -3.9% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, porous-tipped pen exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 199%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Tunisia (X units) and South Africa (X units) were the major exporters of porous-tipped pens and markers in 2021, reaching approx. 45% and 39% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X units), mixing up a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Tunisia, with a CAGR of +36.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 120%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of porous-tipped pens and markers were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, porous-tipped pen imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Algeria (X units) and Nigeria (X units) represented roughly 30% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.8% share, followed by Libya (6.7%), Tunisia (6.2%), South Africa (5.5%), Kenya (5.4%) and Ghana (5.3%). The following importers - Angola (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Rwanda (X units) and Guinea (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +37.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest porous-tipped pen importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Libya ($X) and Algeria ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports. Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Angola, Guinea and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Among the main importing countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +23.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, waning by -8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
