The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X units) and Tanzania (X units) were the key exporters of portable electric lamps in 2022, amounting to approx. 34% and 26% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X units), generating a 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mauritius (X units), Guinea (X units), Liberia (X units), Rwanda (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) - together made up 12% of total exports.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest portable electric lamp supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -2.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+20.5% per year) and Mauritius (+28.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per unit), while Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, imports of portable electric lamps in Africa surged to X units, with an increase of 31% against the year before. In general, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 275%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, portable electric lamp imports amounted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +86.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 213% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Djibouti ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
