Cement Market Size in Africa

After two years of growth, the African cement market decreased by -11.8% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a slight descent. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Cement Production in Africa

In value terms, cement production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 9.7%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, cement exports in Africa expanded remarkably to X tons, with an increase of 9.6% compared with 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cement exports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 82% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), achieving a 5.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +138.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Senegal ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 46% of total exports. Burkina Faso, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +110.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 7.2% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Cement Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of cement imported in Africa declined modestly to X tons, with a decrease of -2.7% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cement imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Libya (X tons) and Mali (X tons) were the largest importers of cement in 2022, recording approx. 14% and 11% of total imports, respectively. Madagascar (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Somalia (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 27% share of total imports. Niger (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mali ($X), Libya ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 30% share of total imports. Niger, Mauritius, Botswana, Madagascar, South Africa, Rwanda, Cabo Verde, Somalia, Sierra Leone and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +12.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild setback. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
