Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato chips imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The purchases of the twelve major importers of potato chips, namely Morocco, Libya, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Gabon, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola, represented more than half of total import. In value terms, the largest potato chips importing markets in Africa were Botswana ($X), Libya ($X) and Morocco ($X), together comprising 34% of total imports. Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Gabon, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Swaziland and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +13.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
