The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +33.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, potato chips exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +104.5% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together constituting 96% of total exports. Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of +45.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest potato chips supplying countries in Africa were Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Zambia ($X), together comprising 98% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Zambia, with a CAGR of +51.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
Potato chips imports fell to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -6.7% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, potato chips imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the twelve major importers of potato chips, namely Morocco, Libya, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Gabon, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola, represented more than half of total import. Senegal (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest potato chips importing markets in Africa were Botswana ($X), Libya ($X) and Morocco ($X), together comprising 34% of total imports. Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Gabon, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Swaziland and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +13.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+13.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
