The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 23%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, potato starch exports in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 216% against 2020. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, potato starch exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), constituting a 9.5% share of total exports. The following exporters - Egypt (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - together made up 7.7% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato starch exports from South Africa stood at +6.7%. At the same time, Morocco (+201.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +201.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-1.4%), Niger (-9.0%) and Egypt (-23.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+44 p.p.) and Morocco (+9.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Niger and Egypt saw its share reduced by -2.3% and -24.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest potato starch supplier in Africa, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+215.1% per year) and Niger (-4.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -12.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 138% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+34.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of potato starch increased by 67% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed prominent growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, potato starch imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importer of potato starch in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (15%), Algeria (11%) and Nigeria (10%). Angola (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato starch imports into South Africa stood at +16.8%. At the same time, Nigeria (+44.2%), Angola (+22.1%), Egypt (+11.3%) and Algeria (+9.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +44.2% from 2012-2021. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (+17 p.p.) and Nigeria (+9.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco saw its share reduced by -21.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest potato starch importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Egypt ($X), together comprising 69% of total imports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +54.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -27.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
