In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cement prefabricated structural components exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons), together generating a 21% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zambia (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 9.9% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+21.1%), Ghana (+14.1%) and Swaziland (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012-2021. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-15.4%) and Morocco (-20.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+7.5 p.p.), Ghana (+7 p.p.), South Africa (+4.6 p.p.), Botswana (+2.6 p.p.) and Swaziland (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Zambia and Morocco saw its share reduced by -9% and -11.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest cement prefabricated structural components supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Zambia ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising 77% of total exports. Morocco, Nigeria, Botswana and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +21.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -12.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 26%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of prefabricated structural components of cement, concrete or artificial stone increased by 37% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) were the main importers of prefabricated structural components of cement, concrete or artificial stone, together achieving 67% of total imports. Egypt (X tons), Guinea-Bissau (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

While the share of Nigeria (+19 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+8.9 p.p.), South Africa (+7 p.p.), Morocco (+3.8 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.2 p.p.), Guinea-Bissau (+3 p.p.) and Egypt (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Algeria (-13.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prefabricated structural components of cement, concrete or artificial stone in Africa, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +56.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+29.9% per year) and Morocco (+7.1% per year).
