Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +32.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 49% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (6.9%) and Kenya (5%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 9% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to preparations for animal feeding exports from South Africa stood at -3.3%. At the same time, Mauritania (+69.7%), Kenya (+28.2%), Egypt (+22.7%), Swaziland (+7.9%) and Mauritius (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +69.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Swaziland (+11 p.p.), Kenya (+4.6 p.p.), Egypt (+3.8 p.p.), Mauritania (+2.9 p.p.) and Mauritius (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-4 p.p.) and South Africa (-13.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest preparations for animal feeding supplier in Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +5.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+31.3% per year) and Swaziland (+3.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, preparations for animal feeding export price increased by +50.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 45%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Nigeria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.7% share, followed by Namibia (5.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (5.5%), Ghana (4.9%), Tunisia (4.8%) and Kenya (4.8%). Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uganda (with a CAGR of +44.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 26% share of total imports. Uganda, Nigeria, Morocco, Cote d'Ivoire, Sudan, Tunisia, Kenya, Ghana, Madagascar and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.
Uganda, with a CAGR of +51.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
