The African lubricant additives market reduced to $X in 2021, dropping by -8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Lubricant Additives Production in Africa

In value terms, lubricant additives production dropped dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In 2021, approx. X tons of prepared additives for mineral oils were exported in Africa; declining by -33.5% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lubricant additives exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Senegal (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together constituting 92% of total exports. Zambia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of prepared additives for mineral oils imported in Africa declined modestly to X tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 8.2%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lubricant additives imports fell modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the largest importers of prepared additives for mineral oils, together comprising 73% of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +24.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 53% of total imports.

Algeria, with a CAGR of +20.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 3.9% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
