Explosives Market Size in Africa
The African explosives market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Explosives Production in Africa
In value terms, explosives production expanded remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
Explosives exports rose significantly to X tons in 2021, picking up by 14% on 2020 figures. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +93.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, explosives exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 46% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together creating a 45% share of total exports. Uganda (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +75.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest explosives supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 9.7% share.
In South Africa, explosives exports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+4.1% per year) and Burkina Faso (+59.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 1.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 9.7%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Explosives Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, imports of prepared explosives in Africa expanded notably to X tons, growing by 8.5% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 56%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, explosives imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Burkina Faso (X tons) was the main importer of prepared explosives, committing 49% of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Tanzania (5.3%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.7%). Guinea (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mali (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
Imports into Burkina Faso increased at an average annual rate of +13.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+29.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+21.0%), Ghana (+18.1%), Mali (+14.3%), Tanzania (+9.0%), Zimbabwe (+5.5%) and Sudan (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-2.4%) and Zambia (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Burkina Faso (+25 p.p.), Guinea (+3.7 p.p.), Ghana (+2.4 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia saw its share reduced by -3.8% and -6.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest explosives importing markets in Africa were Burkina Faso ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 44% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +19.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
