Prepared Mustard Market Size in Africa

After six years of growth, the African prepared mustard market decreased by -1% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a resilient increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Prepared Mustard Production in Africa

In value terms, prepared mustard production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of prepared mustard decreased by -1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 35%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared mustard exports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 54% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Morocco (X tons) and Ghana (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 39% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of prepared mustard. At the same time, Egypt (+66.3%), Ghana (+14.6%) and Morocco (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +66.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+16 p.p.), Ghana (+4.4 p.p.), Egypt (+3.8 p.p.) and Morocco (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Senegal saw its share reduced by -30% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest prepared mustard supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with an 8.2% share.

In South Africa, prepared mustard exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (-19.9% per year) and Morocco (+0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Prepared Mustard Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of prepared mustard decreased by -3.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, prepared mustard imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Mali (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Gabon (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Congo (X tons) represented roughly 76% of total imports in 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Gabon (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest prepared mustard importing markets in Africa were Mali ($X), Gambia ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 30% share of total imports.

Gambia, with a CAGR of +16.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
